It has been a long time since I have done an interview and I am so excited to be able to do one this time with the lovely Rebecca of the blog: Style it Green as I think she has an amazing style and really styles her tights well. I am so thankful she agreed to do the interview, so here it is.
1. Do you like wearing tights and hosiery? If so what is it about them that you like?
Yes! I LOVE wearing tights and hosiery, and I have since I was a little girl. I was a ballerina for a number of years as a child, and my mother was a theater teacher. Between the dancing and the exposure to costuming through my mother's work, I just intuited the concept very early on that tights are a way to feel "fancy," and to this day, I wear them when I want a polished feel to my look.
2. How many pairs do you currently have and what is your favorite pair you own?
I probably have about 30 pairs, depending on whether or not you count stay-ups and stockings. More recently, I have gotten really fond of silk stockings that can be worn with a garter belt and suspenders. I find that to be one of the most classically feminine ways to get dressed up. I have two favorite pairs of tights. The first is a pair of cotton children's tights I got at J.Crew. They are gray with little kitty faces on the knees. I love how playful they are! I also love that they keep me warm in winter so I can wear skirts and dresses all year long. My second favorite pair is actually a pair of Marlies Dekkers they are so well made, so comfortable, and so flattering. I always receive compliments when I go out in them. When I first received them, I wore them for a week straight, no joke!
3. What is your favorite brand of hosiery?
I am obsessed with the Marlies Dekkers stay ups, and it would be a dream come true if she'd make some traditional tights, too. I'd buy a bunch!
4. How often do you wear them and do you wear them year round?
It certainly varies based on what I've got going on from week to week, but I typically wear tights at least once per week, year round. I wear warmer ones in winter and usually sheer ones in hotter weather.
5. What would you tell people who are hesitant about wearing sheer hosiery, especially skintone shades?
Two words: KATE MIDDLETON. The Duchess of Cambridge is one of my major style icons, and Kate rocks the sheer hosiery like nobody else! I think her looks always look so elevated because she wears sheer hosiery. Finding the right tone is key. For sure, you want to look natural when you go the sheer route.
6. What advice do you have for others about styling tights and incorporating them into outfits?
In addition to picking the right shade if you go sheer, you should really just think of tights as an extension of the rest of your fashion and personal style. If you like big, bold patterns and color, there are plenty of tights that will let you show off your style. And, if you're more of a subdued dresser, tights in lots of different neutral shades area a great way to give a feminine, put-together look to outfits featuring dresses, skirts and even shorts.
7. There have been manufacturers who have made tights for men, and some that still do. What do you think about this trend?
I am a big fan of wearing menswear; it's absolutely liberating and empowering! On the flipside, it's a breath of fresh air to see men who are interested in using items traditionally marketed to women in their wardrobes. However, what I have found through my own love of menswear is that it really looks and feels best when it's tailored to my female body shape and size, rather than directly "Borrowed from the boys" and I imagine the same to be true for tights. The ones made specifically for men are likely more comfortable for men to wear, while retaining the aspects of the look that men are hoping to achieve. I would recommend to men who are interested in tights to wear them however they pleas! Tights are made to be seen, sometimes in subtle ways, and sometimes as the centerpiece of an ensemble. For sure, show off your legs hen you're wearing tights!
8. If someone told you them have no tights, what would you suggest for them to get for their outfits and style?
I think the right "starter set" for anyone without tights would be one sheer pair, one solid opaque in a neutral color and one pair with a pattern. I'd recommend using them each a few tights and reflecting on which pair felt most :right" for that person's style, and building a collection based on that initial trial period.
Here are some outfit photos she sent me on how she styles her tights! I love all the outfits and all the tights she is wearing as I think there is a great variety from red tights to ultra sheer skintone shade! I love the backseam ones on her! I think she is a natural at styling her tights and putting together amazing outfits!
I want to thank Rebecca so much for agreeing to do this interview!
I hope you enjoyed the post,
